Belgian Shepherd Dog:
The Belgian Shepherd Dog (aka Belgian Sheepdog) actually comes in four closely related varieties: the long haired Groenendael (pictured at right) and Tervuren, the short haired Malinois, and the rough coated Laekenois. In the United States, the first three are recognized as seperate breeds, and the rare Laekenois is not recognized at all. In other parts of the world, all four are considered one breed.
All varieties are bright and athletic (the Groenendael is one of the easiest to train dog breeds), and excel at police and military work. They can also be an endearing family pet - as long as this intelligent, sensitive breed has an owner who understands its nature and is willing to train it patiently. Given enough exercise outdoors, the Tervuren variety calmy accepts the confines of an apartment or home. The others are not recommended as stay-at-home housepets. The ratings at the right can generally be applied to all varieties, although the Malinois rates lower on the affection level (1/5).
