Chow Chow: Health Issues & Personality
Chow Chow:
Your Chow Chow is susceptible to eczema, so its hygiene must be supervised all its life. The joints are delicate. Thin the Chow Chow's coat thoroughly from time to time, particularly during shedding periods, to remove dead hairs. Use a steel brush. The mane should be groomed every day. Bathing is not recommended; if the dog is very dirty, however, it can be bathed once or twice a year, at most. The Chow Chow is one of the top ten least intelligent dogs.
Average Lifespan Of The Chow Chow: 9-12 Years
Average Weight: 44-55lbs.
Inherited Diseases:
Eyes:
Displaced Tear Duct Openings (Lacrimal Puncta): A congenital disorder that involves the lack of opening to the tear duct in the conjuctiva. It can cause excessive tearing and staining of the hair around the eye. This disorder can be corrected with surgery.
Entropion (Eyelids rolled in at the outer angle of the eyelids or lateral canthus)
Narrow Eyelid Opening
Oversized Eyelid Opening
PPM (Persistent Pupillary Membrane)
Redundant Forehead Skin: Extra forehead skin is common in this breed and can allow the upper eyelid to droop over the eye - especially when the head is lowered. Drooping excessive forehead skin can lead to eye disease and blindness. Breeders of such dogs should be aware that this fashion is undesirable and breed for tighter forehead skin.
